review 1: A terrific insiders account of some of the most important and historic events that shaped Israel from the perspective of a senior governmental official that served Prime Ministers Eshkol, Meir, Rabin and Begin. From their foibles to their triumphs, Mr. Avner paints a compelling and poignant portrayals of these giants of Israeli history and the events and times that shaped them. Shakespeare would be proud!
review 2: This was fascinating. It is indeed an "intimate narrative" by Avner who served (as speech writer) under Golda Meir, Levi Eshkol, Yitzchak Rabin, and Menachem Begin. Born in England, Avner went as a youth group leader to Israel before May 1948 so the book recounts a very large span of history. He's a very smart man. Highlights for me were the fact t
... morehat he was a Labor party faithful but was asked when Rabin stepped down to serve under Begin which he did with trepidation and he came to love Begin. As someone who was not pro-Begin and who lived in Israel in the 80's I was startled by a number of the stories he told of Begin's dealings with especially Reagan and Carter and Kissinger over peace talks with Egypt and how smart Begin was and I was moved by the admiration and loyalty Avner came to feel for Begin. Also the real friendship Sadat and Begin apparently formed. Also of note is that Avner shares material from his own diaries regarding world leaders and much of it is startling. For example the anti-semitism of Queen Elizabeth is interesting to read about, as is the complexity of Henry Kissinger. And much more. I couldn't stop reading this book. less
