review 1: Blood Lad is one of my favorite series of all time, just because. (I'll try to be as unbiased as possible in this review!)I first started reading it online, where it quickly soared to the top of my favorites, and left me desperately waiting for its recognition. Eventually my perseverance paid off, and it became animated, along with translated into multiple languages, so I could then buy each copy the day it came out in my town (to the annoyance of my parents). Most fans describe Blood Lad as the "better vampire story". In essence, the story revolves around Staz, an elite vampire "otaku" obsessed with the Human World, especially Japan. After a Japanese human girl stumbles into his part of hell and is turned into a ghost, his new goal is to return her to her original human fo... morerm. To me, Blood Lad seems to have a pretty endearing storyline. Kodama Yuuki, the mangaka, does a pretty good job of giving depth to his characters in just a way that makes them all either lovable or relatable, which I feel is pretty important in a story. In addition to the main struggle of resurrecting Fuyumi (the girl) back into a human, there is a co-existing, much more threatening plot happening alongside their story, that eventually they become tangled in. Overall, this story provided a great storyline that I wasn't expecting, along with fun characters, and lots of funny jokes.
review 2: Whew, these are longer collections than I'm used to. this was a very engaging story with familiar character types and a richly imagined parallel world and magic systems. I instantly liked Staz, although the girl everyone is trying to save has no personality and just stands around looking helpless with cantaloupe sized boobs (Oh shonen manga, why must you be so vulgar) in different inappropriate costumes. I'll probably read another, and I like the drawing style for the male characters, I just wish it was a bit less sexist. less
