This series is basically a supernatural soap opera masquerading as High Literature. Do not be fooled by the philosophical musings! Hand this book off to Shonda Rimes and she wouldn't have to change a thing, except that Tallula would probably be some fabulously coiffed black woman from Chicago. I'm surprised at how well Glen Duncan writes Tallula, mainly because Jake was such a pretentious sad old werewolf that I got tired of him halfway through the book, but all throughout this one I found myself thinking, "Man that Tallula is a badass!" She even made me feel slightly morally superior, which is not an easy feat. But on the topic of male characters, one thing I do find strange and I guess somewhat interesting is that none of them are nearly as fleshed-out as Jake was; all of the others are pretty inconsequential or weak-willed or cannon fodder, Walker could pretty much be any dude out there, Fergus is probably unhinged...and so on, and so forth. However, my inner misandrist approves of women in literature being leaps and bounds ahead of their male counterparts.

After a run of not that great books I was really looking forward to this. Sigh! Not nearly as good as the first book, Jake was a much better main character than Talulla who I found a tad annoying. But the worst thing had to be the author's constant banging on (pun very much intended) about werewolves and their greatly increased sex drive, dull don't care, mentioned far too often, just get on with the damn plot please. Quite sure there will be another book and quite sure I won't be reading it.

Good if you like werewolves. A little heavy on the sex.
