I came to read a few H.P. Lovecraft’s stories in this compilation from a recommendation of a friend and I can safely say that I was not disappointed in the least. I had not read too many horror stories prior to this, but I do consider myself an avid science fiction reader. This entire collection contains a very diverse selection of work, but many of the stories piece together to create the intricate story of the Cthulhu Mythos. I sampled stories related to this mythos and also the non-related ones. The stories of Cthulhu offer tales of ancient horrors that have been kept hidden away from humankind for centuries. The shorter tales, such as Pickman’s Model or Colour Out of Space, tell of eerie or frightful encounters with other cosmic horrors, of which Lovecraft had such a talent for creating. The Cthulthu Mythos was described in many of Lovecraft’s stories, (such as The Call of Cthulhu and Shadow Over Innsmouth) and I found it to be quite an intriguing and scary idea. There was such detail put into the legend of an otherworldly horror that it kept me glued to the screen of my Kindle. I personally enjoyed Lovecraft’s narrative writing style, it gives the stories more of an eerie feel. It gave the effect of a whispered tale from a disturbed soul. The language used in the stories is rich and vibrant, which overall adds to the terrifying elements of the stories. One thing that people do complain about is the blatant racism in these stories. Considering the stories were written in the 1910s to 1930s, this is understandable for the time. It is wrong, yes, but I do not let it interfere with the horrifying great content of Lovecraft’s stories. I did not find it to be so intrusive that I could not enjoy a story. All things considered, these stories are a great read. I would recommend it to science fiction fans and fantasy fans alike. This cosmic horror genre that Lovecraft created is immersive to any reader who can appreciate a good creepy story.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I was actually surprised at how *SCARY* it WASN'T. Mind you, it was sublimely STRANGE. There were many, many stories that made me decidedly UNCOMFORTABLE, but none of them really SCARED me. That all being said, I now understand why Lovecraft is so, well,... loved. His skill in prose... his actual writing talent was INCREDIBLE. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it and would recommend it without hesitation.
Best formatted collection I've seen of this, but my does old HP look derpy on the cover.
Odd stories. I am enjoying reading them, but definitely odd.
Love strange fiction and love H.P. Lovecraft.
