4.5 stars.Seriously good, I couldn't put this down at all for the last half of it! It has an interesting, compelling set of characters, both mortal and divine, add some delicious court intrigue and fantastic worldbuilding and mythology, and you get a hell of a good read. The gods, of course, are the biggest pull and hook of this book, and they're written so well - deceptively mortal, and disconcerting and terrifying when they show how much they really aren't. The ending was refreshingly surprising, so I have been converted to this series!
Deeply weird (and slightly disturbing) bodice ripper. While the world is interesting, the story really was not -- plus it triggered two of my particular issues. First, there's a lot of near-but-not-quite-pedophilia. Second, there are no such things as princesses (and yes, the lead was a princess, even at the start in her far away kingdom) without staff. Yes, I do not hold these things to be morally equal. This could have been so much better a book and it wasn't and that kind of annoys me.
Weird but compelling.
