I have read this book last year after I heard everywhere about it, and let me tell you that I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I like to read dark erotica/BDSM and everything in between, but it was something in this book that made me really, really cringe. What it was is the piss poor decision that O is making. What I did not liked and I did not enjoyed, is that she decided to let herself be used only for the sake of others. Not her, not for her pleasure, not for her sanity, only for others. This was the thing that bothered me most. Not all the humiliations and the sex, joint or single, just this fact that everything was done for the sake of others.I am starting to rant, don’t I? Well I also think that this book objectifies the woman. And as open minded as I am I still could not pass the fact that she was seen as a piece of meat that everybody can use and abuse and then O will be somehow Ok with this fact.So no more ranting but only rating….1* thus.
This book was great, this is the original book that is before Shades of Gray time, its not for everyone but its more realistic than just some secretary who wants to screw some guys and be called submissive, its more than that. To me its more real when it came out it was shrouded in controversy and for the longest I don't think anyone knew who even wrote the book, this name of Pauline was the author's pseudo name, and no one really knew who wrote it. They went under a fake name because everyone thought the book was written by a man, it was not. The Story of O is original, it is not for everyone that's for sure, that I can say, some will read it and say its trash but others who know the history of that era in time it is gold, and a huge achievement. So with that said I would tell anyone to give this book a try but its not for everyone, if its not for you than leave it for those who enjoy it.
Read Kushiel's Dart instead.
