This is the fourth installment of Ms Kenyon and Ms Love's Belandor series. I love anything from these authors and when the two of them get together you have on heck of a story. This book will answer a lot of questions that the first three books brought up. We finally find out the answer to what the Alterants are and where they came from. And what the evil Mebd want with them. This was a wonderful action filled book from start to finish. I can't wait for the next installment of this series.Evalle is an Alterant, that means she can change into a beast state that gives her greater strength and faster healing than a normal human. She also works for the Belandors. They protect humans from the paranormal and the paranormal from each other. No one knows what the Alterant are or where they come from. Some people want all of the Alterants locked away or killed. If Evalle can find out what the Alterants are and where they come from and bring them in to pledge themselves to the Goddess Macha then they will be under her protection and be allowed to live free. Queen Flaevynn and her followers call the Medb want the use them to fight Macha. The queen thinks that if they do that it will end the curse that has imprisoned her. On top of everything Evalle has to do her relationship with Simon has come to the point that she knows she loves him and will do anything to keep him safe
Frustratingly excellent story. I've really loved the series with Eval and glad that she and Storm finally get together. However, it's frustrating that it ends on such a traumatic note. I rated the story a 5 because it held my attention the whole time, I read every word, and the quality of writing is excellent. The twist and turns were great and it was full of surprises. The ending left me unfulfilled and frustrated. Why can't Eval have something that ends happily? This is the 4th book in the series and I don't see an end in sight. How many more books will it take to have that happy ever after feeling? I usually don't make it this many books into a series that continues on with the same person. I prefer the series that go from one person to the next with each book ending happily. Even though the series is good, I'm done.
Great story.
