I have been looking forward to Royce's story aka Dayziel for the most part through out the entire Bastion Club series. Since he was being portrayed as this very mysterious aristocratic older commander of spies during the war with France, I got definitely intrigued with his past and how he will come to find his own bride when the time comes. I like that all of the heroines of this series are of a much mature age, so Royce's bride is also someone he had known for a long time and has been with his family and household since she was six who also have a childhood crush on him. They do fit together. He was the kind of Duke who was definitely different from his late father and from the other Varisey's before him. I like how he worked with his people and for the people in his estate and in his community as well. He is genuinely concern and care for other people and despite being arrogant in other aspect of his life he is very commanding and is dedicated to what his dukedom will entail, and Minerva Chesterten complimented him in every way. Their story wasn't that unique but I like how Royce's character developed here as well as Minerva's.Finally the last traitor has been revealed and I kept guessing which of his male cousin is the one. He is a demented person and I was not sorry of how Royce dispose of him although so quickly.
Book: 3+Audiobook: 4 (Steven Crossley)The story picked up a lot in the second half. I think the problem with the first half of the book was the lack of written dialog between the two main characters. Of course, it was fun having previous characters showing up later. Steven Crossley was good. Royce's voice was sexy, but his women's voices were a little odd. I had fewer problems with the first half of the book in the audiobook version. Series rating: 3.5#2-#7 were all strong#0.5 and #1 were not as good#8 was in between, with the second half much stronger than the first half
One of the better ones in the series but still a bit too long.
3.5 stars
