review 1: A really charming book. Although the mother definitely gets a little crazy at times, she knows she's crazy. She just can't help it. I almost wish my parents had been more like her! I was an over-achieving, hard-working kid by nature anyway, but I could have been even more over-achieving! Imagine the possibilities! After all the criticism this book got when it was first published, I was sure it was going to be a dour treatise on how horrible American parenting styles are and why Asian families do it so much better, but it wasn't that at all. It's a funny, light-hearted look at one family that will make all but the most sour of sourpusses smile.
review 2: One scary read. On the surface, this book is about western v. asian parenting but there's so much more to it
... morethan that. I never quite knew whether the author was serious or tongue in cheek and I feared for the sanity of her daughters as she *hot-housed* them through their childhood. It's an intensive read but one that just has to be completed. It poses a lot of questions about parenting and the high price of success, it doesn't offer many answers but it offers a fascinating insight into the mind of a Chinese mother living in America and it offers a frank account of her approach and mindset in raising two daughters. All parents should read this. less

It took me one day to read entire book. Very interesting and honest.
