review 1: What I took away from this book was that Chinese parents know that their kids can be the best at everything, which is why they push their kids so far. I wish Western parents had that kind of faith in their kids. Instead they just let them do whatever they want and they become undisciplined. The book felt like a Fiddler On The Roof--esque story of a parent trying to keep (parenting) traditions alive while their children and society are pulling away from it. This book will make you laugh, and even sympathize with the author, no matter how radical you think her ideas are. It was an enjoyable, easy, and informative read.
review 2: I read this mainly for the cultural aspect involved and I am not sure how I feel about it. I liked hearing about how Chinese people rais
... moree their children, however the author's communicate drastically affected the vibe of the book. She made the Chinese people seem superior than the other ethnicities out there. It bugged me a lot, but I had the option to read it and still somehow managed to like it. As I was reading the book into their teen years, my mind constantly wandered to the idea of one of her daughters killing herself simply because her parenting was that brutal. She had to realize that making her children attend a modern Western public school was obviously going to affect their behaviour and choices. She failed to accept this until Lulu (youngest daughter) had a break down. One thing in general with most mothers of rich culture is that the refuse to see things from the teens' point of view and fail to see that there are other things to deal with outside of the house as well. During your teen years you are also more sensitive to your feelings and surroundings. This aspect faltered to be distinguishable for the mother which has probably got to me my biggest pet peeve.Lots of controversy with the book, however I am pleased with the ending as I favoured Lulu right from the beginning. less

Battle Hymn by Amy Chua was good. It was the first autobiography I've read that was interesting.
