review 1: I found this book at my school book fair and I saw it and said "Why not give it a try?" So I brought it and I can honestly say I didn't love it. I expected it to be a super cool book but it kinda let me down. I thought this was going to be set in a high school setting but instead it was set in a fifth-grade setting! Also something else was that Lydia's handwriting was hard to read. I found it very hard to get through certain pages. But we all have different opinions on book so I may not love it but someone else might. So please don't say "How do you not like this book?!?!?!"
review 2: Excellent book, diary format written in dialogue form with the two girls differentiated by Lydia’s blue ink cursive and Julie’s black ink printing. Wonderful drawings, high
... morely expressive. Lydia and Julie are 5th graders who want to know what makes the popular girls popular and they decide to research it out. They write out their questions and their findings in a notebook, including drawings that frequently made me laugh. During their year of research, both girls explore new ideas experiences. They learn that people change as they grow up and that they—and their classmates-- can be multidimensional, each with his/her own likes, dislikes, and preferences. Some parents will object to the girls’ home lives—Julie lives with her two dads, Daddy and Papa Dad. Lydia lives with her divorced mother and her older sister. Both living situations are treated very matter of factly with Daddy and Papa Dad especially both human and wise. I didn’t find Lydia’s mother as real, but her reactions were appropriate.Girls, 4th grade and up. less
