review 1: My favorite non-fiction book of the year from Elle. While I know a part of that is the similarity of our stories -- transient lives due to husband's careers, and the blessing and curse of repeatedly having to start over in new and (sometimes) exciting cities -- her story is well-told and fascinating. Her solution to her malaise and finding herself alone in Paris is simple -- start a new writing project -- and the project she lands on, researching regional French history in order to learn about French cuisine, is enjoyable and interesting. I'd highly recommend it.
review 2: Mah has a really easy style of writing that draws you in, with vivid ways of phrasing things. She is a very competent food writer, which isn't super common, and the book is enjoyable, being f
... moreast-paced enough to keep your attention. Chapters are fairly long but don't feel like they drag, with recipes at the end of each one that are well-matched to the chapter (again, not something you can say of every foodoir). This was a surprisingly excellent foodoir. I don't really care for books about Paris; I'm not a francophile in that sense and frankly I think Paris is overrated (particularly among foodies). But this was a really great honest look at more of France than just Paris. less

cute book. I love a book with recipes although these seem a little far beyond my skill level.
