review 1: I’m not sure I would have been *as* interested in this one if it did not have the Chinese element (American-Born Chinese 30-something New Yorker Isabelle moves to Beijing to live with her sister Claire after she has hits series of speed bumps in her professional and personal lives) BUT, since it DID have this “element,” I really enjoyed picking up the tiny lessons on language, culture, and food. It kept me interested beyond the underlying, more typical “finding yourself/30-something” story-line. Fun and enjoyable! Recommended! Made me want to a) travel to China and b) order some Chinese food! (No, scratch that: find a Chinese grandma (nai nai) to make me some good ol’ fashioned Chinese food!) ;)
review 2: I thought this book was a fun, enjoyab
... morele read, and while the romance storyline(s) felt very familiar and not particularly exciting (really would've loved to see more scenes with Charlie, so at least I certainly enjoyed one of the love interests!) the food descriptions alone definitely took me up to three stars. This may not have made me want to run to Beijing but it certainly made me want to run around the corner to the nearest Chinese restaurant. less
