review 1: I enjoyed this book. It's been my "light reading" while studying for the bar exam. It is easy to read and provides some insights on medical school. I had no idea really what doctors went through to become doctors. There are one or two parts of this book that were really difficult to read, in that the situation he was describing was just so horrific. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in the medical profession and also what it's like to grow up in a non-traditional family setting (his parents were Korean immigrants and his family was the only non-white family in the small town where he grew up).
review 2: In this memoir by Korean-American Anthony Youn, the writing is fast paced and witty and there is a feeling of mischief and mirth behind every an... moreecdote, whether it's the grueling depiction of Youn's murderous routine as a second year med student or he's recounting his wild and enlightening rotation with a celebrity plastic surgeon. It's hard to say that I came out of the book with more knowledge of the med student experience or feeling inspired about his field or dedication to it. Maybe it's because there was so much focus in the first half of the book about Youn finding acceptance romantically and with his peers and then in the second half of the book those things kind of became irrelevant as the focus shifted to Youn choosing his career path. So while it was clear that after years of struggle and growthTony found a mate and an accepting peer group, they basically became ghost characters and took some of the heart away from the story. less
