review 1: I really wanted to love this book -- heck, one of my creations is in it. Published at close to the peak of Regretsy's initial popularity, I had high hopes but April's trademark foul mouth and cutting remarks had been toned way down for publication to a potential wider market. It's still a pretty good look at some of the key types of stupid crafting that started sprouting up in DIY marketplaces like Etsy (and others) but without the full impact of the sarcasm and, frankly, mean-spirited comments from the Regretsy community, the book falls a little flat. For true fans it's a must have but others will no doubt wonder what the fuss is about.
review 2: I'm a big fan of Regretsy and April's writing on the site, so I decided to try the book, since I think Etsy is such
... more an interesting manifestation of American culture: an obsession with consumption to the point of being ridiculous, and the DIY concept. I liked the little bit of writing in the book (mostly the chapter introductions), and the photos/products were funny as always, but I was hoping for something slightly... more than the site. (I also found it a bit short). I also was kind of annoyed with the constant need to justify herself and the internet "snark" movement...if we're buying your book, it's because we love that stuff, so no need to waste time with it! In short, funny, but a little disappointing. less
