review 1: A great biography of a most amazing man. I first met him through reading Deborah Devonshire & have now read "A Time of Gifts" & "The Violins of St. Jacques".I liked them both although a bit hard to read. I found that this biography was the same - I raced through some parts & really slogged through some. Very glad I read it as I learned lots of history. I would loved to have known Patrick Leigh Fermor - a most learned, witty & clever person.
review 2: Very well written. The 'heart' of his life was during the period between 1934 and 1945, which included his walk across Europe and his wartime experiences, most notably in Crete. The book focuses heavily on this period, not far short of half of the book , though only 11 of the 96 years of his life. His fame wrests
... morequite heavily on those years and what he wrote about them. However, I felt that his later life, especially after 1970, was given too cursory a treatment by the author. Nevertheless, I very much enjoyed reading the book. less
