review 1: An absolutely wonderful portrayal of life in rural Arizona at the beginning of the last century seen through the eyes of young teacher Elsie Hayes. Through her brief daily diary entries and letters home, we follow her through her adventures and the highs and lows of three years of her life. At times, it reads like a romance novel, following her relationships with two men in particular. Elsie's indomitable spirit shines throughout the book. Highly recommended.

... moreiod. Unfortunately,I found by the middle of the book, even though Elsie was moving along through her journey, that the information in the book became repetitive. Their was not a lot of new insight after the first 6 to 8 months of Elsie being a teacher. less
