review 1: I watched the telly show with Billie Piper and well, I wasn't bowled over by the book. Her attitude to sex work was refreshing at first, but her narrative voice began to bore me after a while. I also felt there were gaps/jumps in the story (didn't she hand in her resignation at the place where Giles works before she buggered off to Argentina? How did she end up back at the job after she comes back?). It's a quick read that doesn't need much brain space, but it isn't a must-buy or anything.
review 2: Some of her gems from Belle's Best Bits:On literary feuds: "Norman Mailer's passing was truly the end of an era in more ways than one. A new generation with decreased attention span means no one can spare 20 years hating on Salman Rushdie any more."On acting like a
... more"stupid girl" to avoid being alone: "You've glimpsed the future, and while it's nice to be running around with a cute little body like yours now, someday you'll have to choose whether you are willing to compromise when it comes to relationships or prefer to become the intensely lonely fossil who, on finishing the eighth double Scotch of the evening, blankly stares into the middle distance, considering the irrevocable march towards death."On wealthy girls with mousy hair: "There's nothing someone like me can do to compete. These girls wear their expensive lifestyle the way it should be worn: carelessly. I can't do that. I put shoe trees in my pumps and am on a first-name basis with the dry cleaner. I'm a try-hard. Nothing in my life has ever been careless. But what they don't know is that I may look tame but I am really feral. And that's why we become the mistresses. The call girls. And I would rather be bought for the cost of three hundred an hour, keeping my spare time my own, than for a token heirloom ring. I'm a man's woman. Someone who can down gin by the half-pint and shoot a decent frame of snooker. The sort of girl that you have an affair with, not the sort you marry.I fucking hate them.Except, and this is the jam in the works...I still love him. It's not just the wounded pride that makes it hurt. It's the rich, aching desire of wishing he was here. I know I could do better, find a real man, find my equal. That isn't the point. It's him I want."On being faithful: "No one values the truth over perceived fidelity." less
