review 1: How does one deal with a sick child, when the diagnosis is unknown? If you're Beth Maloney, you hunt down answers with all the tenacity of a bear protecting her cubs. I bought this book after watching a version of Sammy Maloney's story on "Mystery Diagnosis." The full version made my jaw drop several times. I admired Beth's strength and determination, yet so many times, simply wanted to gather the family into my arms and hug them. Descriptions of how life in Kennebunkport, Maine is "supposed" to be, juxtaposed with descriptions of Sammy's ever-progressing illness, makes the book all the more jarring and poignant. I found myself genuinely worrying for him, his brothers, and his mom, knowing already that they would find answers but wondering what would happen in the meantime... more. This book not only raised my awareness of PANDAS, but also gave me an inside look at a family's real struggle without a bunch of medical gobbledygook or the feeling that I should pity the affected individuals. That's tough for a medically-centered memoir to do. Diagnosis: great book.
review 2: I will say that I was pleasantly surprised with this book! I knew it would be an inspiring story from the title but it was more than that. I was afraid it would be so depressing that I wouldn't be able to read it. I was wrong. You defiantly feel for this family but it is told in such a way that you are mesmerized. It's fascinating to see what this child(& mom) go through and to find out the causes the sons abnormal behavior. I have to say that it blew my mind! Very inspiring & well written. I also give the mom kudos for going up against the medical institutions & fighting for what she knows is right. Go mom! less
