review 1: Kephart's way with language made me feel like my writing angel was in my head whispering wonderful things. She is gracious and generous without being wordy. I misunderstood the purpose of memoir before reading this. Especially wonderful is her use of memoir passages as examples. Pay close attention. Kephart provides a section on great examples of memoir so those who want to write it can first read it. She even includes a couple of writing exercises for the reader, though if you are looking for a book of writing exercises, you should look elsewhere.
review 2: When I picked up this book, I was expecting it to be a memoir of the author's journey writing a memoir. What I found was more "how to". It was enjoyable, but I felt it was too heavy with excerpts from othe... morer memoirs. I do appreciate the extensive list of memoirs she suggests at the end, and have added a few to my "to read" list. Overall I wish there had been more on her personal journey into memoir. less
