review 1: What I found best and most sincere about the book is that it was not afraid of being repetitive. The cycle of abuse, regret, then abuse again to wash off the bad feeling is a hallmark of addiction, and it can be repetitive to a point that it would overwhelms the book, which I think, in the case of this memoir, it does. However, I do not consider this a down side in the book necessarily, as the whole point of the memoir is to portray the experience of an addict, as the title suggests. And if that would be achieved by overwhelming the reader with the real picture of how hopeless and despairing this cycle of addiction is, then let it.
review 2: This was a really interesting book on the behaviors of a crack addict. Bill Clegg tells the story in a series of jumpshot... mores on how he came close to ending his life through the use of crack. Clegg flashes his memoir through the year he spent as a crackhead with a recurring story of his childhood. Apparently even as a young boy he had problems urinating. This was little understood by his parents and Clegg suffered until he was thirteen and involved in a tragic accident. Then he did not remember until some therapy sessions later. As a disclaimer Clegg is gay and his boyfriends play a prominent rule in this memoir. Family is a strong tie and did stick by him while he was in rehab. His main boyfriend he broke up with after rehab when he spent a year recuperating and talking with his father. He is working again and came back into the world to tell his story. Drugs are scary and can cause a person to lose everything. less
