review 1: For sheer nostalgia, this book pulled at my heartstrings. I grew up during the middle of the Console Wars. I started out Sega, went Nintendo, and am currently a Sony guy. Very fascinating story of the rise and fall of Sega. At one point, they rose high enough to take over market share from Nintendo before crashing and now only making software. The story is told from the point of view of Tom Kalinske, mainly responsible for Sega's rise. The author did exhaustive research to include points of view of Nintendo and Sony people as well, though the book definitely has a bias for the underdog Sega. It was very interesting to see how the video game industry went from a tiny, insignificant industry, to one that makes billions and billions of dollars. I rated this a little l... moreower just because the author had the tendency to go into far too much detail and drown the reader.
review 2: If you are a video game nerd, this is a pretty decent look at the Genesis/(S)NES console wars back in the day. Note that it's pretty heavy on the business/marketing side of things and heavily skewed towards a North American viewpoint and Sega specifically. Many reviewers have noted that the dialog is clearly made up by the author, so it makes me skeptical of the accuracy of the book in general. At the end of the day though, I grew up playing both consoles and I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. less
