review 1: As an avid Kiva lender I was thrilled that my brother loaned me his copy of this book to read. Never mind that it took me 11 months to get to it. If it had been my own copy I would have highlighted and marked the heck out of it because there was just so much to glean from the words and experiences of this international traveler and philanthropist. Kiva remains my favorite charity and as Bob shares in the book--- one of the most well respected. While there was a lot of technical and financial parts of the book I found that they enhanced my understanding of micro finance and how it all works. The personal stories of times spent with borrowers were so interesting--- right down to the charcoal yogurt. If this does not inspire readers to loan $25 I don't know what will. T... morehanks, Bob,for such a lovely glimpse into your life.
review 2: Pros: I loved the story this book tells of the lives touched through microfinance. I thought it was fascinating to see the different countries and the similarities and differences in lifestyles, goals, MFI approaches, etc. Despite the cons below, I would recommend this to anyone interested in microfinance, as it serves as a very good introduction to the subject.Cons: I was not a huge fan of the author's style of writing, which often detracted from the point of the stories being told. I also found the excessive number of footnotes distracting. Footnotes have their place, and some were well used, especially where statistics or other more detailed references were included, but where he was simply adding in a personal anecdote or informing us that a name was changed to protect a person, those could have been incorporated into the text to ease reading. less
