review 1: This is a biography worth reading. My understanding of O'Connor is definitely deeper, and Gooch has done a lovely job of providing insight into an amazing mind and the writing it produced. I don't read a lot of biographies as too often the biographer can't get out of the way of the subject--Gooch doesn't fall into this trap; he gives us a well-researched, straightforward presentation that honors and respects O'Connor, her faith, her work, and her life.
review 2: I greatly enjoyed Flannery and wanted it not to end. I suspect having read the body of Flannery's stories coupled with a great affection for her art, wit, and faith, Gooch's bio was gobbled because I was hungry and to me it it was a real good meal! Well woven and documented, full of insights and a thoro... moreugh and complete picture of her life and the situation of her development and writings. Highly recommend it. I, for one, will reference it (good indices and notes) again and again! less
