review 1: Brad Willis, the author of this inspirational book, became a NBC war correspondent and spent time in Korea, Afghanistan, Korea, Hong Kong, covered Desert Storm, and the first half of this book is full of his incredible experiences on the job he loved. During this time he took a fall, while trying to close a window during a tropical storm, and landed on his back. He spent years in pain, not wanting to loose his job which he loved so much, he just sucked it up and put up with the pain during his long flights to many places most of us will never visit. The pain grew worse and worse and he started to gobble pain pills to keep it in check, then along with alcohol, so he could sleep with the pain. Finally he can no longer take this pain and he returns to the United States, Cor... moreonado Island where his 2 sisters and his mother lived, and had back surgery, he had been workingfor 7 years with a broken back. During this time he marries his girlfriend Pamela, who had been living with him in Hong Kong. They have a precious baby boy, Morgan. Not only does the back surgery not work now he discovers he has stage 4 throat cancer, even though he has never smoked...he is subjected to radiation treatments....and is given 2 years to live by his doctors. He falls into deep depression, the only light in his live is his young son Morgan, who pleads with his father to "Please get up Dad". He wants to be around for his son, his current situation is horrible, his wife and sisters and mom check him into a rehab clinic to get off the drugs and the alcohol....which he chooses to do cold turkey...not easy....he then joins a pain clinic, and in the end a yoga class, in which he can barely do any of the positions....but the teacher helps ease him into the positions, he gets into meditation, and little by little he is gaining movement, strength, and increases his studies in yoga, meditation, looses 85 pounds, learns to deal with the pain when it comes his way, changes his diet, goes vegan, does cleanses, and rids his body also of the stage 4 cancer. This is a very inspirational story. Brad is also a friend of mine, and went to school with my husband. The last time we saw Brad he had just returned from Hong Kong I believe, we had a wonderful visit over a Chinese dinner, and I now realize he must have been in pain at that time, but he didn't show it. I will also admit I bought this book because of knowing Brad in the late 1960's early 1970's, and I did not expect the story to have such strong effect on me. I recommend this book for its amazing stories in the beginning and for the hope it inspires in the end.
review 2: I was surprised how much I ended up liking this book. I really didn't think I would in the beginning. The book is divided into 3 sections, and only the final one is about yoga. The sub-sub-title is "A war correspondent's memoir" and it really is that more than a book about yoga. I could have used more in that section, personally, but I did appreciate that he focused so much on the mental/spiritual aspects of yoga, rather than just the poses. less
