review 1: Although I found the book wordy with specific court case summaries, I found them important to the novel. I found them tiresome, but necessary to the novel, if that makes sense. This book completely changed my personal stance on the justice system and capital punishment. This quote will stay with me until the end of time; "What would happen if we all just acknowledged our brokenness, if we owned up to our weaknesses, our deficits, our biases, our fears. Maybe if we did, we wouldn't want to kill the broken among us who have killed others. Maybe we would look harder for solutions to caring for the disabled, the abused, the neglected, and the traumatized. I had a notion that if we acknowledged our brokenness, we could no longer take pride in mass incarceration, in executing pe... moreople, in our deliberate indifference to the most vulnerable" (Stevenson p. 291).
review 2: I didn't think this was a great book, contrary to popular opinion. I felt Stevenson presented heavily biased stories, in which vast amounts of information were omitted and it was obvious this was the case. I also didn't think it read terribly well, at times reminding me of high school English papers (I credit a good editor for making the book flow). I came away remarking on what a typical lawyer he was: getting a man's sentence reduced because even though he'd killed an 8 year old girl with a bomb left on his ex girlfriends porch (who he was stalking), he'd had a tough childhood and had fought in Vietnam. It's frustrating to read that, since millions of people fought in wars and had tough childhoods and it doesn't seem like every single one of them was bombing ex girlfriends. He was playing legal angles not to protect the innocent, but more to reduce sentences for the guilty. This book left a bad taste in my mouth pretty much across the board with a few exceptions (fighting to reduce mandatory life sentences for minors, getting the ONE not guilty person out of prison). less
