review 1: I struggled with this one a bit. Lovely prose, incisive political observations, but little depth of character. For all its sexual frankness, aspects of the protagonist still felt withheld, repressed. The text was so flat, in fact, that the pretty remarks about light and temperature started to annoy me. Still, an intelligent account of expat life at end of Cold War. Recommended on the condition you don't need plot.
review 2: I really wanted to like this book. It's right up my alley. A budding young writer, full of idealism and adventure journeys to Prague in 1990, fresh off the Velvet Revolution, and explores the city with a colorful group of expats. He has lots of sex (unfortunately not in 50 Shades of Grey detail),experiences heartbreak, culture, confronts his
... more future as a writer. It's full of pretty sentences and feelings of what it's like to be young in an exciting foreign city, but lacks any action, and the clunky sections leave one confused. It becomes tedious to read gorgeous description after gorgeous description while at the same time creating a barrier between the narrator and the reader, since the action is told in 3rd person limited perspective, rather than a first person narration, which lessen the tedium of having virtually no plot. But Prague is a beautiful city, and everyone should visit there, just don't waste your time reading this book. less

A lovely, plotless reverie that I was almost able to finish.
