review 1: I personally loved the insight this book gives to it's reader and how every single argument is verifiable if you look it up the index. however I would have enjoyed it more, if it included more about the study and that is why it received 4 stars. But it did tackle all the problems surrounding drugs, how we think about them and problems with drug policy that I could think of and from a US specific look onto the issue, it did an excellent job.This would be a great read, if you enjoy reading studies with applications in real life illustrated with stories from someone's past.
review 2: Initially I found myself disliking Carl Hart, thinking he was arrogant and fairly misogynistic. I know realize this was much more of showing the accurate misogyny and arrogance that i... morenfluences young men lives. Dr. Hart excellently describes the ways drug research is misrepresented in the media. Some of his salient points include the massive and frequent hysteria around drugs, that are always claimed to do the same thing (turn their users into drug addled superhumans with no ability to think for themselves). The memoir stuff is less interesting to me, but does contextualize the argument and I think by acknowledging the subjectivity which is inherent in his life, he actually serves to highlight the empirical and objective data he has generated more thoroughly. less
