review 1: Miles and I added this into our evening routine after I picked up a copy of it in June 2013 at Women and Children First in Chicago. Since then I have given it to several friends expecting children. It is a beautifully illustrated book that contains a wide variety of poems, some well-known, and some that should be. There is a good range of children represented in the illustrations as well, which is very important: children of a variety of ethnicities from all over the world. If we want to raise children who are sensitive to beauty and rhythm and verse, I can think of few better ways than a daily exposure to poetry. The companion book is also excellent. I understand there is a holiday edition which I think we will get for this upcoming holiday season.
review 2: I... more think students will be grabbed by the title of this book by Caroline Kennedy - memorization can be a fun way for students to share a poem aloud to their class or to illustrate while recalling the words. In this book, various styles and types of poems are presented to the reader about topics such as sports, picnics, nature, etc. and Kennedy shares some tidbits about her own family's appreciation for poetry on many pages throughout. Kids will love that they can identify with the poems shared and create their own. less
