review 1: I feel like I read a different book than the rest of my book club. I didn't find this a quick and uplifting read. I did find it positive, enriching, painful, and beneficial, however. Humor: for a bit it felt like reading Forest Gump; Herz-Sommer knew so many famous people and was around for so many significant world events!But then we got to Thiersenstadt and things got real, fast and hard. I didn't mind the non-sequential chronology, but I did wish for a timeline and list of significant people/characters in the end pages.
review 2: The subject of this book is fascinating. I saw a video clip of the short film about her and had to order the book. Unfortunately, the title is misleading. It does not speak much about surviving the Holocaust and only the last cha... morepter mentions quotes from Alice sharing wisdom. Yet, her life experience is inspiring and amazing. Her musical gift truly carried her through harrowing hardships. The confusing organization and lack of depth ruined it for me. less
