review 1: I bought this book because I enjoyed a TV documentary. My advice would be to stick to the documentary. Probably sacrilege to say it, but I found the book surprisingly irritating. Firstly, there's not much of Alice Herz-Sommer's wisdom: just sprinklings through the book and then a couple of pages with various comments brought together, such as "I am never tired because my mind is active."I took against this book when the author (Caroline Stoessinger) used the word "immigrate" when she meant "emigrate." This mistake was then repeated throughout the book. There were other minor proofing difficulties (e.g. Queen Mother needs to be capitalised). But what really did for me was the gushing style. EVERYONE in the book needed to be deemed special: the well-known actress, the famou... mores scientist, the celebrated pianist etc. I could cope with this at the beginning when describing how Alice knew the internationally celebrated writer Franz Kafka but it began to wear very thin. More importantly, isn't it good to remember that ordinary people survived the holocaust, that ordinary people can do extraordinary things in quiet unobtrusive ways?
review 2: An absolutely beautiful book about an amazing woman. It is not your typical Holocaust survivor book, it shares memories and life listens from a woman who has lived, learned, experienced and survived so many different experiences in her 110 years. She tells of the many individuals who played an important part of her life, people we have heard and read about. A short book that took me some time to read, as I kept writing notes and rereading many parts of it!! A must read!! less

This story is truly inspiring. I hope I can still practice the piano at age 107.
