review 1: This 2013 Stephen Leacock Award winner captured, I think, the essence of what that award represents. This was a work of humour, that was also a warm and wise character study. From a cast of lost souls, including one ghost, comes the story of Frieda, the artist. As the story opens, Frieda is trying to find her way, trying to "be ordinary", having given up on her art. When she rents a room from an older gentlemen, she meets Gladys, a ghost. As Gladys' sad story unfolds, Frieda thinks she knows what she is to do and sets about trying to set things to rights. In the process she begins to find herself and once again to feel and connect with herself as an artist. There is a right balance of redemption in this story.Stock has nailed this one well. A first novel, winner of... more the Stephen Leacock.....excellent. She deserved the award and we'll look forward to more from this author.
review 2: This was everything I expected of a Leacock Medal winner, and it left me with just the right mix of laughter and profound meaning. There were a few moments where the story faltered for a bit. When things were humming along on rails, though, it more than made up for those lapses. At its heart, this is a novel about finding or losing the primal creative essense of art in all its forms, but there was also a strong bent of sexism and gender [in]equality that really gave it teeth.I'm also pretty easy to win over when a book is so shamelessly Canadian. The moment when a converstion took an inordinately lengthy detour into the habit of Saskatchewaners to place a box of Kleenex in the rear window of their car...well, that was probably the moment I knew this was a book for me. less

A fun and easy read. Lots of good food for thought on stereotypes with regards to women.

It reminded me a bit of The Woefield Poultry Collective. Not as good but enjoyable
