review 1: Quite an interesting read, but rather on the shallow side. Lacks deep insights, typical of ex special forces who know too much and can say little. In this case the story was not about SEAL stuff...... or was it? But about the journey through life and accepting God's word, of which he had the platform to speak freely, but somewhat held back. Maybe in the next book, which I doubt I will buy. There are better special force stories and there are much better Christian books, this one does neither that well.
review 2: WOW. This book is about 300 pages long, and if I'd reviewed it after about 200 pages, I think I only would have given in two stars. It was really difficult for me to read. The author gives graphic details of his obnoxious behavior as a boy and a yo... moreung man, having great success at sports and giving each one up for some other "greater" goal. Losing his mentor to a grisly ambush in Iraq, he vowed to become a Navy SEAL and wreak vengeance. His long, detailed description of SEAL training was riveting, but nothing new after I had seen similar documentary on cable TV. Predictably, becoming a SEAL did not give him the satisfaction he expected. However, the power and sincerity of his testimony of his salvation soon after SEAL graduation truly was awe-inspiring. And, [spoiler alert] the real climax of the story is the beating he receives at the hand of some drunken fellow SEALS who are upset that he will no longer party with them. His desire to become an evangelist grows as he is deployed for several years with the SEALS, and the overall effect of the book turns out to be very pleasing. less
