review 1: I have come to enjoy the narrator and the writing in this memoir even though I was put off by the opening. Everyone is crying at a funeral in the opening scene, and this type of sentimentality puts me off. However, I came to appreciate the straightforward narration and pacing of the story. I'm posting this review, even though I've not yet finished the book. While I eventually felt the story was interesting, it did (about 3/4 of the way through) start to feel a little mundane. But, as I say, I've not yet finished it,and I'm hoping I come to appreciate all parts of the book and I'll change my stars accordingly.

... moreund most powerful about this book was how he contextualized those experiences and detailed his process of overcoming the pain and struggles from his past to reach a more productive future. It's an incredibly honest book, and one that can definitely help us all reflect on how we define ourselves (and how we should perhaps be kinder and less rigid in that process). less
