Week 48 – 2017

I’m getting closer to the end of 2017! It is unbearably cold here today. It’s definitely stay inside weather (not that I can’t always find some excuse for this). Week 48 covers November 27 – December 3. As always, your feedback is cherished.

The Darkling Bride bu Laura Anderson – I received this as an actual book in a Goodreads giveaway. This is historical fiction and mystery and a bit of a ghost story all at once. Carragh is hired to sort out an old library in a castle (dream job, right?) in Ireland. Aidan’s parents died in said castle 20 years previously and their murders were never solved. There is also another mystery surrounding an author and a ghost story and Aidan’s great great grandfather. I definitely recommend this one to anyone that likes a mystery or a story or even just a book. Basically everyone. Except people that don’t read. I wouldn’t know what to do about them. I’m giving it 4 stars.

As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner – I received this as an e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. This historical novel tells the story of a family that moves to Philly during WWI and about the flu epidemic and how they deal with the aftermath of both. I truly enjoyed it. The pace was a bit slow at times, but the story itself was solid and made up for any gaps in the flow. I would definitely recommend it for historical fiction fans. I’m giving it 4 stars.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber – I borrowed this as an e-book from the Boston Public Library. It is Caraval #1. I wanted to like this book a lot more than I actually did. The concept was the best part of the book. The premise is intriguing. The delivery, on the other hand, just wasn’t enough. It didn’t really deliver for me. I know this is YA so I’m not truly the intended audience, but I do read a lot of YA and this just wasn’t that great. 2 sister want to escape their awful father and run away on an adventure when they receive invitations to the yearly caraval. They are to be the special guests. The premise of the caraval is that the person that solves the puzzle wins a prize. Or something. It was okay. It just wasn’t the best. I’m giving it 3 stars.

Bridget Jones’s Baby by Helen Fielding – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. It is Bridget Jones #4, though it actually takes place before #3. It definitely fits with the brand and it’s quite funny and a quick read. I like books that are set up as diaries. And Bridget is very much a relateable (not an actual word) character. In this, she has broken up with Mark and they have a brief tryst, followed closely by a one night stand with Daniel and when Bridget finds herself pregnant, hilarity ensues. I’m giving it 3 stars.

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. This is Lady Sherlock #1. The premise with this one is that Sherlock Holmes is actually a woman named Charlotte and that she solves puzzles and mysteries herself. Charlotte has orchestrated a ploy whereby she has been made a social pariah and cast out of her parents’ home after her father refuses to fund her education. She solves the mystery of 3 suspicious deaths (1 in which her sister is cast as a possible suspect) and sets up a business with the help of her new employer (she found a role as a companion to an eccentric former actress). This is a fun read and I immediately put the next one on hold with the library (sadly, after an entire month, I am still only #23 in the queue for 3 copies). I’m giving this 4 stars.

5 books is enough for 1 week, right? It had better be because there aren’t any others. That is it for Week 48. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions for what I should be reading next.
