review 1: I picked this one up because it was on the Booker longlist. It started promisingly enough with interesting characters that you genuinely care about. I don't think I have read a book were the two main characters struggle so much with who they are and what they want. Ultimately very frustrating as it made it difficult to invest in their struggles when they were self imposed. I didn't find it funny just irritating. Poorly developed male characters that made it difficult to see the attraction. The cultural background went nowhere, the strange plot twist of the family secret was dull and strange and did nothing to explain the course of the story. Ultimately although this seemed to be two women searching for the love of a man to fulfil them it was really about their love ... morefor each other. Disappointing, I won't be seeking out her other work and am not sure why this made it on to the list? O.K. but not much more.
review 2: Some lovely characters in this book that you can picture. Particularly the Hungarians who you can hear. The two female leads are very frustrating characters who can't communicate with each other or anyone around them for fear of judgment. The narrative explores the public school system and old boy network and how your fave either fits or not. I was glad to reach the end of this book as it was going nowhere. The characters are well written and my rating is really 3.5 stars. less
