review 1: Montross is a good writer. She is a psychiatrist who writes about life on the ward and how hard it is to make life decisions for people. She deals with what it is like to face the quandaries of taking mania away from someone when they are happy, etc. She writes poetically and is thought provoking. The problem for me is I am a psychologist and have worked in those same hospitals and had many of the same thoughts so there was not enough that was new to me. For whatever reasons I wanted to hear more about her patient- interaction-- her actual therapy. It was not that kind of book. It is more about the philosophical dilemma of psychiatry. The best part of the book is when she brings in her own family and how her family concerns often shadow her work issues, i.e, It is as ... moredifficult it is to protect those you love, as it is to protect those in your charge at the hospital. Basically it is an impossible job and you have to hope for the best.
review 2: 3.5 stars. As someone with an interest in psychology and just people's behavior in general, I am always excited about a book of good case studies. What I felt was most impressive about this book was how sensitively Montross wrote about the patients she was portraying, but how clear she was at how difficult it is to deal with some of their cases. I think I would still recommend Irvin Yalom's similarly themed "Love's Executioner" over this book, but Montross' book makes a good "if you liked this, then you'll like this" follow up to that work. less

Fascinating glimpse into how Dr. Montross has learned to "abide" with her patients.

Excellent book! Probably the best book I've read so far about emergency psychiatry.
