review 1: Good companion novel for "Into the Wild". Seeing the pictures of what Chris felt was important enough to document was interesting. We now are so used to digital photography and taking endless pictures, so seeing the one or two things he felt moved enough to photograph was a window into his thoughts. A criticism against the book was the additional narrative added by his parents, for it did not ring true. The photos of his travels, postcards sent, and the picture of the belt should have stood alone.
review 2: This book provides insight to Alexander Supertramp's travels across North America. It's a remarkable collection of diary entries, postcards, letters and pictures. I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to disconnect from society like Chris did, but I admire
... more his strength and willpower to follow his dreams, against odds and without approval of anyone else in his life. His whole Alaska Odyssey was a disaster but you can't deny the happiness evident in his pictures-even emaciated as he was. No doubt, Chris was feeling a bit invincible when he entered the Alaskan wild. I also strongly feel there's a lot to be said for simplicity in life, such as Thoreau wrote about. We DO get mired in the responsibility and authority of life. It DOES make us depressed, sad, and angry but it's something most people find a balance with in order to be a part of civilized society. Chris just was not able to live in that thin haze between happy and dissatisfied. He felt that man should please themselves and be at maximum happiness every day, even if that meant solitude. In the end, part of the death bed revelation Chris had was just heartbreaking. He had made friends over the last two years but he had not contacted his family and he hadn't spent much time with these new friends. He died scared and lonely in the solitude he enforced on himself. "Happiness is only real when shared." Christopher MccCandless 1992. less

It was a good book and interesting perspective of a guy I would have written off as a 'nutcase'.

The pictures make it worth buying. The captions make you wonder why you bought it.
