review 1: I expected to hate this book and feel like it was an ecological liberal pushing his agenda. While there was some guilt inducing chapters I didn't feel like I was getting yelled at the whole time. The author admits to being part of the problem as well. It was interesting to read about how they tried to live off the grid in Manhattan and what they could and could not accomplish. Overall I walked away thinking I could do more in my personal life and my personal choices can make a difference.
review 2: A family decide to reduce their impact on the environment. Some things are a little bit extreme, others are not. But I think the main point is to see how extreme we can go and then what is sensible to keep and doable. It is interesting to see what humans can drop wi
... moreth ease and how other things require more time. But one thing that you need to praise is that the book doesn't make it out as an easy task. Beavan tells you of his failures, of the shortcuts he'd take every now and then and also there is the fact that they paced themselves. They do not start the year making no impact, the gradually change over the course of the first six months, with the last months being all about maintaining what they had already done.If you are New York based the book gives you lots of tips are the end of things you can do. Some relate to us none New Yorkers. It is a quick read, so why not see if you could be doing something little to help change the world. less

Learned a lot. Made me want to change some habits. I've taken a lot for granted.
