review 1: I had no interest in this book when I first heard of it. I thought it would contain fairly shallow minibios of saints I already knew about, with connections drawn, possibly forced ones, to whatever the author had experienced. And I honestly was specifically uninterested in the author. Somehow, whatever I had read from her in the past failed to connect with me, to the point that I'd see her name and think, "Oh, her again" and not want to commit the time to reading.Somewhere, though, I did end up reading a review of this book that interested me in checking it out when I found it at the parish library. I had already been absorbed by the story long before I reached the point at which the author practically explains why I once found her writing somehow cold and distant. It's a ... morevery readable story, but not an overly simple or predictable one, and the material about the saints is for the most part weaved very well into the memoir.
review 2: Beautiful look at how there is more to suffering. The author goes through struggles with infertility while dealing with her father's descent into Alzheimer's disease. Throughout the book she talks about how the saints' own battles with their faith and lives influenced her. This book helped me a lot as I deal with my own father's dementia diagnosis. Campbell is able to find rainbows (literally--in a scene that made me choke back tears) at the end of the storms in her life. I'm grateful I found this book at the right time in my life. less
