review 1: My response to this book has a great deal more to do with the fact that I just returned from a month in Nepal than from the merits of the book. I was moved by the detailed descriptions of places, events, culture and landscape. And people. The descriptions resonated, enriched and deepened what I saw and experienced. Which was as a foreigner, with face pressed close trying hard to understand much more than would ever be possible in this complicated place. I was struck by the fact that Conor did not master Nepali, nor did he successfully penetrate the culture, the many cultures, past a certain point. Yes, he connected with Nepali people and the kids, but he too inevitably lived as an outsider, in the more insular expat world. Which is not an easy world to live in, e... moreven if it is far more privileged than what most Nepalis experience. It is impossible not to be moved by the friendliness and grace of the Nepali people, often in circumstances so difficult it is beyond imagining. Nepal receives a lot of aid and has a lot of orphanages. Things don't get better for a whole host of reasons. Foreigners want to help, and you just hope they don't harm instead. That risk was very evident in the book. This is all to say that this book is the voice of a Westerner, which is a very different thing than a Nepali voice. It did veer into becoming Conor's story, his journey, his knee, his life quest. That's fine. Lets just not think it is something other than that. I hope his NGO is helping and working with the many others doing similar work. I don't doubt how difficult the situation is for all concerned, particularly the children.
review 2: It is a wonderful story of one man's journey to Nepal, around the world, and back again. It was heartbreaking and warming all at once. Every bad piece of news weighed on Conor like a ton of bricks which were only relieved with good pieces of news. The moment he found the children and then again when began his adventure finding and meeting their parents (with pictures to show of their lost children), I cried. It is a wonderful tale of perseverance, hope, and, at its core, love. less
