review 1: This is an outstanding memoir and I loved reading every bit of it. Elephants are my favourite animals in the world so when I learned about the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Daphne Sheldrick's memoir, I knew I had to get a hold of the book. This is truly a book for everyone. It chronicles the lives of one particular British settler family in Kenya and their dedication to and love for the country, the wildlife and its conservation. The work accomplished by the Trust is absolutely stunning. After finishing the book, you are left with the urgent feeling of traveling to Kenya to visit the Trust and the elephant orphanage. Daphne Sheldrick is a remarkable and inspiring woman.
review 2: Love, Life, and Elephants is a well written book that I found vaguely unsati
... moresfying nonetheless. The book begins with a somewhat extensive family history which, to me, was not intrinsically interesting. Then once the book shifted to the beginning of that period in Dame Daphne Sheldrick's life that centered on animals I found it more interesting, though not as interesting as I'd anticipated. I won't lie: the only reason I picked up this book was because of the elephants. The "love" and "life" part was not the draw for me. And I think that I was not crazy about Love, Life, and Elephants because, while Sheldrick's life revolves around wild animals and elephants in particular, and she clearly loves those animals, the book itself did not seem to revolve around animals as much as Sheldrick herself. That's her prerogative as the writer of the memoir! But it did not make it interesting to me personally. I was more looking for a book about elephants than a book about a woman who happens to love and take care of elephants. Still, it was an enjoyable, well-written read. less

I liked the story, but it wasn't an easy or quick read despite only being about 300 pages

I enjoyed the book -- it took me to another world, the world of Africa and elephants.
