review 1: The author looks back on a painful young adulthood shaped by an accident in which a high school classmate veered in front of his car on her bicycle, and was killed. The ensuing years of introspection allow him to understand all of the ways his life was changed by that event. That he became a writer was one outcome, which set him on the path to redemption. That he learned to love himself again is the miracle, and the story we all need to hear.
review 2: I tried to imagine myself as an 18 year old faced with the sudden, life changing event in which Darin Strauss found himself. How would I express all the feelings and confusion? How long would it take to sort out? Strauss does a masterful job of describing the sense of guilt, isolation and responsibility to "live
... more two lives" that is his life after the accident. Even the structure of the book with its blank pages and short passages capture the enormity of the experience. Fortunately, half a life later, Strauss is able to reconcile his life and the event in a way that allows him to live his life. less
