review 1: A well written book from a perspective we don't hear much about. Dr. Hnida is a good writer with an honest and at times humorous view of the tragedies of war. The casualties sustained by our young men and women are life long. It bothered me that our doctors were required to provide medical care to insurgents whose goal was to kill Americans. These military doctors stayed true to their oaths, but I can only imagine how hard it must have been. It's also a story about friendship, family, and serving a community.
review 2: Combat docs, trauma docs; just docs thrust into an insane 130 degree sand-blasted hell to piece together our blown apart soldiers in a MASH unit. I have dealt with years of blunt force trauma and penetrating trauma, but to think of doing it... more in the conditions in this book is overwhelming! Well written and engaging. It's about camaraderie and stress, dying and the obtuse reasons, politics and medicine in a hellhole. For those who deal in trauma, it's the things read between the lines that are particularly anxiety producing. less
