review 1: A friend recommended an earlier book by David Laskin, called the Children's Blizzard, which I really enjoyed. Now the author tackles researching his own ancestors - at least back 130 or so years, and then jumps between the branches that scattered to Israel, the U.S. and stayed put in what was then Poland. The book moves chronologically, which is helpful since it can be difficult to keep the names straight. Each tale is shared with a certain amount of distance, showing that creating a very successful business in the U.S. vs dying in the holocaust were not separated by great genius, but were more likely a matter of luck. This reads as much more interesting than its literal description: one man's examination of his own genealogy. It is well worth the ... moreread.
review 2: This was one of the most interesting books that I have read in a long time. It is the true story of one family in Poland, from the 1800s until the late 1900's. The children take three distinctive paths..... America, Israel, and to remain in Poland. It explores how so many of our parents generation chose to tell us about the Holocaust without telling us how how closely related we were to many of the victims. It was a book that was easy to personally relate to. less
