review 1: This one of my new favorite books because everybody does need hugs. Also, I love the message at the end of the book. I would definitely use this book for the social/emotional domain. In the book, Douglas hugged several tings and described how they felt. As a learning experience, I could have the kids go around and touch or hug different things and have them describe how they felt. I could use this activity for language and literature.
review 2: Hugless Douglas is one of four books about a big, loveable, brown bear written by David Melling. Waking up after a long sleep, Douglas is in need of a big hug. As he goes in search of one, no one seems to want to hug him and when they do their hugs do not seem quite right - too heavy, too tall and too uncomfortable. Of
... morecourse, the only hug that is just right is a big bear hug from his Mum!This book is fantastic for all ages! It has extensive cross-curricular value and is a good example of a book which can be used alongside the new Literacy Curriculum in September 2014.In Literacy lesson children can extend their knowledge of the use of capital and lowercase letters, they can explore “wow words” such as trembling. Their attention can be drawn to punctuation such as speech marks and exclamation marks and they can explore descriptive language.Maths lessons can focus on discussing capacity, weight, length and height. Children can explore the animals and objects Douglas tries to hug and why they were note quite right. This is also an interesting way to introduce comparison and estimation of weight and height, for example, which was heavier to hold the rock or the rabbit.Other curricular links include Art and Design, Geography, Science, Drama and Social and Emotional aspects of Learning. Children can experience the following activities: designing pyjamas for Douglas, drawing a map of the route he took to find his hug, discussing hibernation, discussing why people like hugs and how they make us feel, making posters of different emotions, discussing what we do when someone does not want a hug, drawing pictures of people we like to hug and acting out the story. This book is perfect for the Early Years Foundation Stage however I believe it can be linked to Key Stage 1 and 2 depending on the choice of activities and focus. I have used this book very successfully with Reception aged children and would thoroughly recommend it as a valuable resource. less
