review 1: The amazing, inspiring story of Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Dr. Geoff Tabin and how they restored vision to thousands of people in third world countries who would otherwise have had no access to medical care. It illustrates how inspired, dedicated individuals can have a dramatic positive impact on the world. Knowing that the author ended his life in 2012, gave the book a sadness that it otherwise wouldn't have had.
review 2: I was a bit skeptical starting this book from what I new about Three Cups of Tea, and my own reluctance to read non-fiction that is just celebrity-worship poorly disguised. But it turns out these celebrities, Ruit and Tabin, are worth hearing about and this book is truly well written. I don;t know how Relin decided to navigate between so many com... moreplex stores that start is so seemly disparate worlds, but he does - mixing personal with fact, past with present, Nepal with abroad...Although the book is thin on politics it does touch upon very important political issues as well as international development work and social justice concerns (and problems with efforts in domestic and international aid and medical care). less
