review 1: A haunting but inspiring story of survival. I almost didn't read this book. I thought why would I want to read the sordid details about a dead porn star? I am so glad I decided to give this book a try. This book is so much more then that. It's a book about survival. Survival of drug addiction, brutal abuse, being sold to men by the man you love so he can score more drugs, co-dependency, coming to the realization that no matter how many promises your abuser makes, there WILL be a next time and finally finding the strength to make that final break. This is a powerful book, should be required reading for all addicts, abused women & teens.
review 2: This book was one of the most intense books I've read in awhile. The true story of Dawn Schiller and her relati... moreonship with John Holmes, the famous adult film star....wow. i knew as I read he would transform into a monster, and he did, beating and manipulating Dawn mercilessly (starting at age 15 for goodness sakes, and he was in his 30's !) stealing from friends and family to support his insane, out of control drug habit, and ultimately setting up friends for their murder. Dawn pulled no punches in her description of what happened to her, and I think that was important. Too many of us don't get the full picture of a truly abusive relationship. I'm glad that through her trials she emerged triumphant. less
