review 1: This was quite good. Schiller definitely went though hell. While it is (unfortunately) not a unique story except for the fact that John Holmes was a porn star, it's still a powerful read. Schiller's home life was a wreck, so I can completely understand how she wound up feeling trapped with Holmes. While some may shake their heads and wonder how she couldn't escape, this is one story in which I totally get it. Schiller never learned what a healthy relationship looked like, and while she may have realized she was in a toxic one, she definitely didn't know how to fix it. Also, she clearly attached herself to Holmes, at least in part, as a father figure and she had already been abandoned by her father once, so it's not surprising that she tried to hold on to the only rep... morelacement she had available. A powerful, no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches story. My heart goes out to her.
review 2: Over the weekend I read the autobiography by Dawn Schiller, "The Road Through Wonderland." It largely chronicled the years of the life she spent as the girlfriend of porn legend John Holmes. There are some who would characterize Holmes as a waste of a human life simply because he was an adult performer. However, the reader is able to somewhat warm up to Holmes, in the beginning at least, as Schiller shows how kind and generous Holmes was.Schiller also writes about how Holmes did not enjoy his work in porn and only did it for the paycheck. The kindly version of Holmes is short-lived as Schiller describes the porn star's trip into the abyss as he gets wrapped up in drugs, namely freebasing cocaine and turns into a monster.Schiller's writing is matter-of- fact, very readable, and polished. Having said that, the book is depressing and the tone is one of hopelessness. The reader can see how bad Holmes is for Schiller's well-being and how much Schiller would like to be happy again. Only, like many battered women before her, Schiller thinks things will eventually get better.Telling the reader the outcome of the book would spoil the ride and what a journey through hell it is. Let it suffice to say that Schiller makes it out on the other side and I would be interested in reading anything else she writes. less
