review 1: The Drama The Street And The Seduction is a short story by Deatri King-Bey. When I was reading the author’s synopsis of the story on Amazon, she seemed to almost apologize for it. That should have been a warning for me. I decided to take a chance on it, however. It’s a very short read. I finished it in one sitting. Finishing it was not a testament to the engaging story as much as it was to my own morbid curiosity. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. The story is set in Chicago. The main character’s boyfriend is in prison for murder, and she is struggling through college while supporting her drug addict brother. The brother owes money to a gangsta that has his eye on the main character. The thug tries to give her an offer she can’t refuse. She is torn b... moreetween bailing her brother out once again or remaining faithful to her imprisoned boyfriend. It sounds dramatic, right? Oh how wrong you would be, dear friends. First, the characters are ALL static and painfully cliche. As for drama, there are two death scenes in the story. They basically play out like this, “He shot him.” THAT was the dramatic death scene. After the “build up”, the story turns into a pornographic fairy tale. The boyfriend is magically released from prison just in time. He defeats the gangsta dragon, and takes the hood princess to his condo castle with a view of the beach.I would have enjoyed the story so much more if it did not rely so heavily on this Deus Ex Machina. Why does this woman, living in a poor neighborhood, supporting a brother and putting herself through college need some man to save her? This could have been a good story with a dynamic character, a woman who realizes her own power. Instead it disappoints and leaves the reader thinking that slush piles are really not a bad idea after all.
review 2: This totally reminded me of the stories my friends used to write in junior high when they knew nothing about story and character development or had the know how to make sure everything made sense. It was like whatever idea came to their heads they wrote it down. We got a kick of it then because we were thirteen! This short story was all over the place and wasn't something I cared for. This was my first time reading something by this author and will more than likely be my last. less
